At this time in Israel's history, they had just entered the promised land as God promised. However, they didn't remove the original inhabitants from the land as God instructed them to so they found themselves oppressed by the Midianites. Due to this oppression, the Lord kept sending them judges to rule them and get them back on track to obeying the Lord. This point in the story brings us to Gideon when the angel of the Lord appeared to him while he was hiding threshing grain and said “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!" Distinguishing his identity from one who is hiding and afraid to one who is about to lead the Israelites to a mighty and unbelievable victory with only 300 men!
